Backsplash Installation

A new vanity top goes in and leaves a strip of bare drywall behind the faucet. The painted fireplace chase is the one wall in the room nobody has touched. Sooner or later most homes have one wall that is ready for tile — right at eye level, where a sloppy line has nowhere to hide.

More than a kitchen wall

Kitchen counter runs have a page of their own. This page is for the rest: the wall behind a bathroom vanity, the surround on a fireplace everyone in the room ends up facing, and utility backsplashes in any room that needs one. Same trade, same tools, same standard.

How a straight wall gets that way

The line comes first

Nothing goes on the wall until a level line does. On our cream tile job in Aurora every course was set to a green laser line; in Greenwood Village the first course was pulled off a level line taken from the counter. Counters and floors are never as level as they look — the laser is.

Protection before tile

Counters, floors and cabinets get papered and taped before the first bag of thinset opens. On the Aurora wall rebuild a plastic dust wall went up before the old tile came down.

Cuts happen outside

Outlet notches and edge pieces are cut on a wet saw out on the driveway, not in the room. The dust stays out of the house, and the cuts come back clean enough to sit flush behind an outlet cover.

The joints that are not grout

Where tile meets a counter, the joint gets caulked, not grouted — grout between two materials that move differently just cracks. On the black subway kitchen in Denver that seam is caulked and the outlet plates sit flush with the new tile face; on the cream tile job the counter joint was cleaned with 91% isopropyl alcohol and caulked by hand.

When the wall behind is the real problem

Old tile rarely comes off alone. On one Aurora kitchen the face of the drywall came away with the old subway tile, so the strip between counter and cabinets was opened to the studs, backed with new framing and re-boarded with fresh drywall before a single new tile went up. Tiling over a torn or humped wall produces a backsplash that telegraphs every flaw behind it — flat comes first.

Fireplaces and accent walls

Tile does not stop at the counter line. On the Greenwood Village job, while the green gloss backsplash ran corner to corner in the kitchen, a dark stacked stone surround was going up on the fireplace chase in the next room. A fireplace wall follows the same rules as any backsplash — flat substrate, straight courses, tight cuts — it just gets looked at even more.

Prices

Wall rates for the common cases, per square foot installed:

A wall of small tile is mostly joints, and joints are the slow part — that is why small formats cost more per foot. Complex mosaic with pattern matching runs $40 per square foot on walls, and grout work, regrouting, cutting and drilling are itemized on the full price list. A backsplash is mostly edges, corners and outlets rather than open field, so the final number comes after we see the wall — a photo and a tape measure are enough.

Questions and answers

Do you install backsplashes outside the kitchen?

Yes — bathroom vanity walls, fireplace surrounds, utility walls and accent walls. Kitchen counter runs have a dedicated page, but it is the same trade and the same hands either way.

What happens to the old tile?

It comes off, and it rarely comes off alone. On one Aurora kitchen the drywall face came away with the old tile, so we rebuilt the wall to the studs before setting anything new. Fix the wall first, then tile — the other order does not last.

What do you need from me for a quote?

A photo of the wall and a rough width. That is enough to tell whether it is a $17-a-foot wall or something more involved — and you will know before anyone drives out.

Is a small backsplash too small to bother you with?

Small walls are normal work here, not a favor. One of the Google reviews below is from a designer whose priority is flawless work for clients — they brought us a small backsplash and called the result exactly that.

Can you just regrout what is already there?

Yes. Cleaning out old grout and regrouting runs $10 per square foot, and epoxy grout options are on the price list. If the tile itself is sound, new grout is the cheapest facelift a tiled wall can get.
